Mayhaw Jelly

We were in Natchitoches this past weekend and my husband picked up a jar of mayhaw jelly. He told me the cost was $8.95 for a pint jar. I knew he was thinking about the jelly I was getting ready to make. We have some friends who have mayhaw trees in their yard and they graciously share with us. A lot of people do not know what a mayhaw is or what it looks like. They just know the jelly taste good. I decided to take pictures while making the jelly to share with you. My husband also told me that there were too many steps for him to keep up with the process. He quickly retired to the den.

This is a picture of the mayhaws. After you wash them, you cook them for the juice.

The ingredients are mayhaw juice, sugar and sure jel. You cook this and then put in the jars. Now I am giving very abbreviated steps.

The final product is worth all the hard work. The best part is being able to share with others and it gives you an excuse to eat a biscuit.
